The Language We Use in Care
Are our words shaping outcomes more than we realize?
Language sits at the center of practice within reports, handovers, and everyday professional conversations. Terms like “non-compliant,” “attention-seeking,” or “manipulative” are often used without reflection, yet they carry weight far beyond the moment they are written or spoken.
Trauma-informed care challenges us to pause and ask: are we describing behaviour, or defining the person? Because language does more than document, it shapes perception. And once a narrative is formed, it can follow a young person across placements, influencing how they are understood and supported over time.
As a sector, this invites deeper reflection. Are our words opening pathways for understanding, or reinforcing fixed assumptions? Are we creating space for curiosity, or closing it too quickly?
At GreenLeaf Homes, we are continually refining the language we use, recognising its impact on both practice and outcomes. Thoughtful language supports thoughtful care and better futures for the young people we work with.
